CALCULATOR - These Roots Grow Deep Pre-Orders

I have to say that Calculator has been one of the most fun bands to work with. They are dedicated dudes who just love making music and doing what they're doing. Definitely fun, and I'd definitely work with them for future releases.

That being said, pre-order their 12" discography + exclusive unreleased tracks here:
http://olhardevidrorecords.bigcartel.com
And check out the venue that these dudes help run, Hyde Park Half. There will be a ton of shows coming up at this place, so keep your ears peeled and your eyes wide.

Also, we like having our music incredibly accessible (even at the risk of streaming and downloading), but if you like it, you'll buy it. So please continue to support these bands and Melotov Records. Help us help bands.

CALCULATOR, DEADHEAD, BENOIT, SHOWS, & MORE

Just saw the artwork for Calculator's 12" due at the end of December. The artwork was done by Juan of Comadre and also comes with a poster (because all you supporters deserve a lil' treat every now and then). Good stuff, it looks as good as it sounds, so I'm extra-stoked on this! Here's a teaser:

Deadhead will be hitting the studio when everyone is back from the Touche Amore tour, which ends Dec. 5th. If you get a chance to see them in your town, go do it. TA live is definitely an experience. Also, DH will be joining forces with another Melotov favorite, Cathedrals, for a split released on Mayfly Records. That shit'll be epiccccckkkkkxxxx so be sure to pick it up!

Benoit, an up-coming band from Orange County has their demo out for download, but keep an ear out for a 12" (or possibly 7") released in early 2010 recorded at God City Studios by Kurt Ballou of Converge. They blow minds live, so download the demo and catch a show.

Thanks for hanging tight on the CAT/BK split. We've had some "technical difficulties" and it's taking (way) longer than expected to get them vinyls out of the plant. Same with Homesick Abortions, so thanks for being patient!!!

Catch some shows, there's gonna be a ton this weekend. And speaking of, we need two bands for NOVEMBER 12th @ THE COBALT CAFE w/ Tragic Ends, The Kingsford Run, Tidemouth (and possibly) Fed Up and Benoit. If you're interested, please contact Tidemouth at their myspace or on the Melotov Records myspace. It'll be a fun time, and we can always just party afterwards. No big. Handle it.

Also, please keep the demos a-comin'! Just got a few good ones in and love listening to them while driving (something I do too much of). You don't have to send a press kit, but get a CD or vinyl out our way. Physical copies will always trump mp3s.

In the name of all that is independent,

Mel(otov)

Pictorial Play-by-Play of FYF

To state it simply, Fuck Yeah Fest (FYF) was fucking amazing. The line-up was eclectic (as you'll see in the previous post with the actual flyer) and again, the sense of kinship was unparalleled. I need to stop being a cynic and expecting clique/pride wars at shows with varying musical guests. Whether you were there to see Cold Cave, Black Lips, or Torche it didn't matter--everyone was there for the same reason. It was reassuring; people do have open minds and can accept other genres. That's what Melotov Records thrives on.

Either that or the Beer Garden made the camaraderie a helluva lot easier (thanks to Erin and Jesse for snagging us 21-and-under attendees bracelets to the garden). Regardless, it was a good atmosphere for an even better festival. Plus I saw a LOT of familiar faces, which made things that much better.

We ("we" being Britney, Jesse, Erin, Matt, myself and 2/3 of Tidemouth, but they came later) began our Tom Foolery as soon as we found sketchy parking for $4. A man offered to wash my windows while we were gone, but instead, we opened up a conversation about the economy and how he was able to live rent-free for 3-months because he was offered $50,000 to sleep with another lady in order to get revenge for his friend (...I didn't understand, but it was interesting regardless). It's always nice to start the day off making friends:

We had to get our heads in the game before picking up tickets at will-call, as Matt and Jesse demonstrate in this photo:

The lined moved quickly to pick up our tickets, and regardless of the fact that I had a Hurricane Harbor lanyard to hold my money 'n shit in, I decided that it'd probably be a good idea to safeguard my tickets under my shirt (with Erin's tattoo'd forearm as added security):

We all arrived in time to catch the end of Japanther's set. We then met up with Ashley, and all headed into the beer garden to spend a few hours lolligagging and allowing time to lapse... a lot. Here's a few beautiful photographs of the goings-on within the Beer Garden grounds. As you can tell, we spent a great deal of time in here judging on the fact that when we entered, the sun was still up. Britney and Ashley enjoying the sun in the Beer Garden:

Erin and Ashley:

Moshing and dancing with the Poulin sisters:

Erin charging me in a fit of drunken fake-pit-rage:

After fighting everyone, Matt, Ashley, and I went to scope out the merch booths, namely the Converge table. Free posters, stickers, and a t-shirt later, Jake Bannon (Converge's frontman) is at the table, just hanging out. I have a ton of respect for bands who will do this. There was no get-a-ticket-and-get-in-line-if-you-want-to-see-the-band or buy-merch-then-we'll-talk deals, just Bannon and Nate hanging out at their table, talking to the kids who recognized them and being completely approachable guys. I thanked Bannon for bringing Starkweather onto Deathwish (if you haven't heard, you NEED to go check out Starkweather right fuckin' now http://myspace.com/starkweather666) and spoke briefly about recording Benoit at God City Studios (http://myspace.com/hurricanebenoit). Jesse, Britney, and Erin met up with us, and Jesse had Nate cross-out his Alkaline Trio tat and write "Converge 4-evah" over it. Br00tal as fuck.

By this point, it was time to see some fucking bands. Matt, Jesse, and myself left Britney, Erin, and Ashley at the Garden again, and we went to watch Torche. Torche blew my freaking mind. Their new album kicks ass, but the entire set (especially the earlier material they played) was heavy as hell. It felt like a jackhammer to the chest, rattling straight through your bones, but it was amazing. Not a whole lot of moshing to Torche, but that was more than okay; they were on the 2nd stage in the middle of the dust pit, so breathing was a nice luxury.

Converge was directly after and started late due to technical difficulties. This was my first time seeing them (and I'll be seeing them later this year with Mastodon at the Hollywood Palladium), and they're ruthless live. By this point, Matt, Jesse, and I had met up with Mikey and Ryan of Tidemouth and their friend Trish. Before Converge started playing, we were all together, but as soon as Kurt struck the first chord, the place exploded and all six of us went off in different directions. It was intense, I couldn't get any pictures, but it was well worth it. There are videos online on Youtube you can check out. Bannon's stage presence reminded me of Maynard (Tool, Pucifer) because of his movements, reactions, and pre-song statements. Converge's set included "No Heroes," "Bitter and Then Some," "Dark Horse," and they closed with "Last Light." And let me just say, that for all of you who talked shit on the new song "Dark Horse," off Axe to Fall, you can eat a dick. They played through three songs off the new album and all of them were extremely punishing and promising. Axe to Fall will be another Converge great.

The dust that was kicked up was unbearable, but that's the price you pay for an outdoor festival in the middle of fire season (i.e. The Station Fire). While we watched Converge, Britney and Erin were watching Tim and Eric blast-beat their way through a musical comedy set:

As awesome as it was to see Converge for the first time, my favorite set had to be Dillinger Escape Plan. They were just absolutely nuts. All of them. And they ran through favorites of mine such as opening with "Panasonic Youth," then jumping right into "Milk Lizard." They played two songs off the Mike Patton EP and then played my favorite song off Ire Works, "Mouth of Ghosts"

The best surprise was that BRENT HINDS of MASTO-freakin'-DON came out and sang during "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" (at least that's what I think he sang to, they did play that song however). I nearly lost my mind at this point. The crowd was going nuts, so please excuse the quality of these photos for I was being quite jostled around during them. I couldn't get a clear show of Brent Hinds, but again you can find it on Youtube, but I was able to snap another shot as they closed with "Sunshine the Werewolf."

At the end of the set, a broken guitar was hurled into the crowd and nearly missed me, grazing my face as it hit the poor kid directly behind me. He went out with a thud and had to be carried to the paramedics... I'm sure he thought it was worth it once he regained consciousness though.

So all in all, FYF was a definite success. My neck is killing me still and so is my throat from all the dust, screaming, and God knows what else. Be sure to check out the bands on the line up that you didn't get to see or have never heard of because I assure you, it's all promising.

Bands of note:
Converge (obviously)
Dillinger Escape Plan (obviously)
Torche
Starkweather
Benoit
Tidemouth
&&&&& CATHEDRALS AND BLEEDING KANSAS who are having back-to-back-to-back release shows for the new s/t split 12"! It's going to be epic. Sleep tight my babies, and go see some damn shows so I don't have to write a novel on here...

Sound and Fury '09 & Red, White, and Blue Tattoo

So, here's my visual review of Sound & Fury '09...

... I got tattooed by Gilbert of Red, White, & Blue Tattoo (Ventura) who had set up a booth there at the venue. It was a 3-hour sesh, so most of my time was spent in the chair, watching and listening to the bands as they played instead of joining in on the pits and dog-piles. Definitely a good time, and more fun than last year (although last year was awesome as well). Shook Ones, Shai Hulud, STZ, and Lewd Acts were rad and it was cool to see kids smiling with blood in their teeth, icing their black eyes, or nursing a bruised nose. People were just having fun, and to my knowledge, no fights; no egos, no pride wars, no tough-guy attitudes even with some of the tough-guy hardcore that was going on. It was a nice vibe all around and I saw familiar faces, which really brought back some faith in what I thought was a scene that was falling apart.

One of the highlights of the night was when a drunk puto flipped a car in the alley, got out of the van and booked it down the street. We swarmed to see if he was okay, but he just crawled out and bolted... leaving the van on its side. Possibly a stolen vehicle? Who knows, but it was hysterical and definitely made the night more interesting.

Red, White, & Blue Tattoo had a booth set up there, and I got my ink done by Gilbert who typically does portrait work. He was such a down-to-earth, nice guy and his attention to detail is amazing. I'd definitely go back to get work done with him. Check them out, they're worth the trip up to Ventura. Thanks again, guys!

Picked up the new Hope Con. 7" which fucking rules, and Lewd Acts LP on Deathwish, good stuff. I definitely suggest getting a hold of both of those records when you get the chance.

Thanks to Sean of 1917 who is a bad ass guy and has helped a lot with Melotov stuff, and to everyone who made Sound & Fury possible this year.

Stoked as fuck.

Twit on this Tweet, You Twats

Yep, rumors are true. We put up a Twitter so that when you don't feel like reading a blog (or I don't feel like posting an in depth update, which is hardly ever seeing as I am a fairly eloquent bitch) you can check out our 160-characters-or-less twits...or tweets (?)

Melotov Records Twitter!
http://twitter.com/melotovrecords

Also, I can't wait for Sound and Fury on Sunday! If you're going, be sure to pick up the S&F special edition of Touche Amore's debut LP on 6131 Records. And be sure to check out Red, White, and Blue Tattoo. They'll be doing tats all Sound and Fury Weekend. I will be getting one on Sunday, so I'll throw pics of that up on here, the Twitter, the myspace, etc.

Even though I hopped on the band wagon for promotion purposes, I still feel like a conforming idiot for doing so. Does anyone feel that social networking has gotten a little too social? It's all internet social, not personal. So get off your lazy asses, go to Sound and Fury (or some other show) and make some friends. I say bring back the days of tape-trading.

Hot damn,

Melanie V

Vinyl.

Read it and reap (the benefits):

The comments at the end of the article are interesting too. If you're not just a music fan, but a music buff, you gotta dig the vinyl.

And mad respect for Michael Jackson, so please don't think I'm trying to make some cheap-shot joke.

Queue Jefferson's Theme Song: "Movin' on Up"

Hello neglected blog-followers (all what... six of you?) it's been a few weeks since my last post, so here's one with some important updates.

First and foremost, an e-store has finally been set up. It's not my official one (the one that was supposed to be done in April, but keeps being pushed back; there have been some issues that need to be resolved with that...). This one will definitely get the job done, it's temporary, but it still makes the music available to you. You can check out our merch for now here at the Melotov Records E-store

Dance For Destruction's 12" LP "When Color Was Real" (MLTVR003) is one sweet sounding piece of wax. There is a limited run of 100 sky blue vinyl and 400 black vinyl. Orders come with free test presses while supplies last. Their CD is out on Lorlei Records and they'll be touring soon, so be sure to catch a show and pick up a copy! You'll save on shipping! Also, Charged's S/T is now on sale exclusively at our merch store. Only $3!

Just got the Cathedrals/Bleeding Kansas test presses as well and they sound fucking awesome. We're going with Erika Records for this one, and working with them has been a great experience! The whole crew has been professional and has kept my best interests in mind, giving me multiple quotes and a very hands-on experience (like allowing me to come down to the plant to talk shop). http://erikarecords.com/ Check them out!

Bleeding Kansas has a show with fellow label mates Deadhead (whose 10" we'll be putting out hopefully in the October/November months). Show is gonna rule, here's the flyer:

Scoring some distro deals with international stuff too, and keep an eye out for shows. We're attempting to book a helluva lot of them. If you're interested in putting on a show, playing a show, or promoting a show, give me a call and we'll talk. All contact info is on out myspace http://myspace.com/melotovrecords

Keep supporting all that is independent and underground!!!

CATHEDRALS & BLEEDING KANSAS and other good news!

Evenin' all,

Picked up the masters and artwork for the Cathedrals/Bleeding Kansas split today and loaded new songs onto the Melotov Records myspace http://myspace.com/melotovrecords

I am seriously so excited to see the finished product, and I can't wait until it drops officially! The artwork is sick; Eddie, drummer for Cathedrals, drew it and did the layout as well. He definitely has a good eye for graphic design and things of that nature. Also a cool dude and has been awesome to work with throughout this whole process. Everyone in Cathedrals and BK are down to earth, humble people, which makes working with them even cooler. So stoked!

All the tracks were recorded, mixed, and mastered by Alex Estrada at The Earth Capital in LA, which has quite an impressive resume of artists that they've worked with (Touche Amore, Mons Worship, Betrayed, Charged, Catch Your Breath, Deadhead, etc). Check out The Earth Capital at: http://theearthcapital.com or http://theearthcapital.blogspot.com Cathedrals bring the doom-punk thrash while Bleeding Kansas keep it smooth and semi-mellow with southern-stoner rock vibes (think Botch meets Pink Floyd). It's a very diverse record and will be run in a few different colored vinyl (more details to come).

Next up: throwing DEADHEAD in the studio to record their 10" while DANCE FOR DESTRUCTION tours in support of their 12" LP. HOMESICK ABORTIONS had to take a breather for personal reasons, but their full-length will be out (sometime) this year.

Until then, check out The Earth Capital, the new tunes on our myspace, and keep supporting all that is independent and underground!

Melotov Records welcomes DENTON NOVICK to the roster!

On Monday, 5/25, Melotov Records joined forces with the lyrically talented and beat mastermind, Denton Novick. Yes, we specialize in music of the punk, hardcore, and metal variety, but as you (should have) read in our first blog, we don't discriminate. Good, independent music is good independent music regardless of the genre.

Denton Novick brings his eclectic musical influences to the hip hop forefront to create music that is truly unique, hard, and phat-as-fuck. Imagine if Jacob Bannon, decked out in all his MMA gear, wrote freestyles instead of fronting Converge. This is not your generic "crunk rap" or "gangster rap." Denton is honest, talented hip-hop at its best, and relentless in his hooks and lines. His beats break the mold and we are proud to be the label to first represent him and get his music out there.

Keep your ears open for Denton Novick, and keep supporting all that is independent and underground!

"...Filmed in and around the exotic punk hangouts of Los Angeles, California over a 5 year period, the film "21st Century Punk Rock Volume 1" depicts the underground punk rock scene in this new 21st century. From fashion to what punk rock has become with the introduction of the internet, numerous interviews with well known bands and heavily influential people involved with the scene help to cover all the areas of this genre. Amazing performances by The Krum Bums, The Lower Class Brats, Shattered Faith, Resilience, Defied, The Casualties, All Out Attak, Dick Politic, 46 Short, Disaster Us, Terezodu, Sayaka, The Voids, Homesick Abortions, and Career Soldiers will give you a feel of what the shows are like today. Interviews from Big Rob (Fatal Riot band manager), Ron Martinez (Crawlspace Booking), Fury (Resilience), Robert Price (The Ghouls), Jake (The Casualties), Namor (Defied), and many more important people in the scene will explain to you what punk rock is like today. 21st Century Punk Rock Volume #1 is the first film to ever document the underground punk rock scene after the turn of the century."

"Nostalgic sentiments..."

For those of you who came (literally and sexually) at last night's show, thank you. It was great to see a gathering of punks(x) from all ages drive out to a deserted-as-fuck-with-no-cell-signal house in Val Verde to give Charged their proper send off. It really restored hope in what seemed to have been a dying out scene. Despite the naysayers, I don't think punk will truly ever die, and that was apparent last night, witnessing all the 14 year old crusties pounding King Cobra. Ah youth... At first I laughed, but that was me a few years ago outside of the Cobalt Cafe sharing a 211 or Mickeys between myself and eight other punks. The best part was the need these youngsters felt to prove themselves, and so they got some pretty good pits going for every band that played. I tip my hat to thee; up the pre-pubescent punx.

Charged played the best set imaginable, including the infamous "TV Addict," which I believe was the first song ever penned by Clark and John. The entire living room (this was a house show) was moshing, and faces familiar and new chanted along to every thing played. As cliche as it sounds, there was a real sense of unity, which I personally haven't felt in full effect for a while. No cops, no drama; it was smelly, sweaty, drunken, and awesome, and although I'm sad that it was their last, it was definitely Charged's best show to date. It fucking ruled basically.

I took a forearm, or fist, or some hard body part to the nose/mouth during "Trenchfoot," which has left me bruised and swollen today, but needless to say it was well worth it.

They ended with "Stand Strong" in which the entire crowd was one amoeba of a dogpile. Pretty gnar if you ask me. It was great, I'll miss seeing them play as Charged, but all four guys have side projects in the works, so that'll be interesting to see.
Thanks again for coming out to support Charged! They may be dead, but punk isn't so keep hitting up shows and checking out what we have coming your way.

But...the Body Isn't Even Cold Yet...

As many of you know (or should know given the fact that the post previous to this one explains it with a huge flyer), this Friday 4/24, is CHARGED's last show...ever. (Un)fortunately, nothing lasts forever; great bands come and go, but that just means that we have more room to grow and accept more music/projects/artists onto the roster.

If you are interested, or have a friend's band that is interested in joining the Melotov Records team, then contact us here:

The End of an Era

It's sad, but true... April 24th marks the final chapter for Clark, John, Niko, and Garrett.

Charged's last show will be held at Jackson's house in Val Verde (which is a pretty awesome place; the 4th of July show last year was definitely one to remember). It's free, so if you still haven't made it to a Charged show, there really is no excuse not to catch this one. All the bands featured are bands from Santa Clarita that developed in the cess pool that is the SCVpunk scene, and will go until whenever the angry and unsober kids decide to stop fucking shit up during Charged's final set. Please don't miss this--and if you do, you can make it up by picking up Charged's last record through CDBaby.com or Interpunk.net. They will be sold at the show for only $5, so be sure to scoop one up and burn copies for all your friends.

CATHEDRALS TONIGHT! See you there!

A few noteworthy Updates

Good early morning all,

Just spoke with Eddie of Cathedrals who informed me that both Cathedrals and Bleeding Kansas instrumentals have been recorded for their upcoming 12" split. I'm excited because Cathedrals is "brutal as shit" and Bleeding Kansas took a heavy but "laid back and dynamic" route on this album. If you  haven't checked out those two bands, I highly suggest you do. I promise you won't be disappointed; money back guarantee. And don't forget to catch Cathedrals tomorrow at the Pharaoh's Den in Riverside playing alongside Lewd Acts, Pulling Teeth, Skin Like Iron, and 108. ALSO, SUNDAY 4/19 they will be trekking down to Boyle Heights to play at the Blvd. Cafe (where Deadhead recently played with Ceremony), and will be playing with Fed Up, and Final Fight. Gooooooood shows lined up this weekend.

Also, Dance For Destruction is finishing up their record as well, due out on Lorelei whereas Melotov will be releasing the vinyl. They put on a great live show; I came across D4D at an American Legion Hall show last summer and they tore the place up. You'd think adding keyboards and a girl front(wo)man would give the band a poppier, mainstream friendly sound (that was my first bias), but they really do keep it grounded in punk. It's not keys and vocals like Paramore, it's straight up electro punx hardcore. Fun to dance or mosh or scream along to. I wish I could catch more of their shows, if only Sacramento weren't 9 hours from Santa Clarita.

AND we (the label) will be having shirts made very soon. It's going to be a small pressing of 100 so they'll definitely be up for grabs. The shirts are all printed on sweatshop-free shirts and the design comes from Dylan Smith up in good ol' Penn State (former vocalist of Broken Hands, and straight-edge vegan activist with an eye for modern art). I'll post pictures soon.

Keep your eyes 'n ears peeled for more news! And be sure to check out melotovrecords.com when it launches at the end of this month!

And remember, altintel.blogspot.com is a great source of information as well, we'll be working with them very closely.

Cathedrals @ Pharaoh's Den This Saturday!

Doom-punk band (the term cleverly coined by our friend at AltIntel.blogspot.com), Cathedrals will be playing this Saturday in support of 108's tour with Lewd Acts and Pulling Teeth. They'll be unleashing some new material, so be sure not to miss out on that. It's going to be heavy 'n chaotic, just the way a live show should be. Check the flyer for details:

So here goes...

I hate keeping up with all the social networking sites that continue to crop up amongst this technologically savvy generation of ours, but Myspace is becoming too much like Facebook with all its pointless applications (the reason why I had preferred Myspace over Facebook in the first place) and now with Twitter on the rise, I felt that making a blog was the most "old school" sensible way to maintain online sanity.

...And thus "conscience vomit." This is perfect for someone who vents through writing (me), posts mundane ramblings of a stream-of-conscience, or has something worthwhile to say. So all in all, this seems like a good fit. Just to be forewarned, the majority of my postings will most likely be about my label, Melotov Records because I'm currently building a website and need a fast way to spread news. You can check out some tunes at http://myspace.com/melotovrecords

So whether you choose to follow or not, here it begins... a saga of pretentious writings from Yours Truly.

Much love!
